ASOTO
I’m a Houston-based artist working somewhere in the realm of Lowbrow (and no, Lowbrow is not a negative term, I often get a reaction like aww, your work isn't that bad! But Lowbrow is an artistic movement that is a close brother to Pop Surrealism that was formed in the late 70s, it has its roots in Skater, Grunge, Punk, and Surfer culture.) My work is bold, and graphic; it's a little cute and a little unhinged. Most of my work is done with ink on wood or through linocuts, with the occasional digital piece. The style leans heavy on thick lines and high contrast, something closer to comics and printmaking than anything delicate.
I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil, back when afternoons meant stacks of Dot Matrix paper from my dad’s office, beat up VHS tapes, and the infinite possibilities of a scratchy number 2 pencil. I went to school for fine art even though I was still pretty terrible at drawing at the time. My thinking was simple: if I was compelled to do it anyway, I might as well get good at it. My work didn’t really become my own until the end of college, when I temporarily went blind during my final painting semester, a story for a different time, but when my vision came back, something shifted. I went on a drawing frenzy. Hours every day, filling sketchbooks faster than I could buy them. That momentum never really stopped; it just slowed down to a sustainable speed.
A lot of my work circles around the emotions people carry quietly. My characters might look happy, but there’s usually a little sadness or tension tucked underneath. Most ideas start on one of the many sticky notes scattered around my life and eventually turn into something bigger. The real test for a finished piece is this: if I have to sell it, will I be heartbroken to see it go? If the answer is yes, then it’s ready to go out into the world, so let me know if you want to break my heart a little.
Thanks for stopping by and spending a little time with the work.
